Glossary of Internet Marketing Terms
Through out this site there are a number of industry terms mentioned that you might not be familiar with. For your convenience, they are provided below.
Conversions
A user's action on your website that takes advantage of a feature that could turn the user into a customer (such as buying a product on-line, filling out a contact form, registering for a newsletter, etc.). This action would usually be something that gets the customer's attention and turns that customer into a tangible lead toward a sale.
CPC (Cost Per Click)
CPC, also known as Cost Per Click. Search engines such as Overture and Google with Adwords charge sites for the number of users they send them on a per click basis.
Keyword/Key phrase
Keywords are words (search terms) which are used in search engine queries. Key phrases are multi-word phrases used in search engine queries.
PPC (Pay Per Click)
A Pay-Per-Click search engine charges websites on a per click basis. Often, an auction is held to see who is willing to pay the most for users.
Organic Listings
These are listings in the search engines that are not for sale. To be included the search engines send out spiders to crawl and index your site for inclusion.
SEM (Search Engine Marketing)
The act of marketing a web site through search engines, whether this be improving rank in organic listings, purchasing paid listings or a combination of these and other search engine-related activities.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
Altering a web site so that it does well in the organic, crawler-based listings of search engines.
SERP (Search Engine Results Page)
The page that is generated by a search engine in response to a search query.
Spider
The software that scans documents and adds them to an index by following links.
