Google Launches Google Trends

May 12th, 2006

It seems there's always something new and interesting coming out from Google. Their latest is Google Trends. With this you can search keywords and see the past trend data dating back to 2004.

It is certainly an interesting tool. What is cool about it is that you can see if a search term has lost popularity over the past two years. With other keyword analysis tools such as Overtures Search Tool and Wordtracker, all we are getting is the monthly data, and no yearly trends. Only if you were keeping log of the search numbers each month, then you would have something to go by.

Us weight lifting as an example, we can see that the overall search volume has slightly decreased. One thing I noticed when testing it out that it does not provide you with suggestions if you happen to misspell a word. I think this would be a good addition. Give the user a choice incase they have misspelled a word.

Now, if you want to compare to keywords against each other, all you have to do is place a comma in-between. For this example I have used Oprah, Maury (two Popular TV Hosts, but one far more popular than the other). We can clearly see that Oprah is getting a lot more searches just after 2004 there was a big spike in searches.

Overall I find this to be a very interesting tool. It will surely be handy in checking past trends and overall search volumes
