How Submitting the Proper DMOZ (Open Directory) Category Can
Save you Time
In addition to working in the search marketing industry, in my
spare time I am also a DMOZ Editor. This article will hopefully help
you see the need for taking the time to find the proper category for
your site. Just today I was adding a few sites to one of the
categories that I manage, and I noticed the date on the original
submission date with the person that submitted their site, and it
was back in May 2002! The problem was that this person submitted to
a category that was hardly relevant to his site, and it was one of
the top level categories. As you can see, it took just under 3 years
for the site to get moved over to the proper category by another
editor.
With the top category directories, these generally get a lot more
submissions, and the editors are spread thin, and sometimes a
category may not even have an editor overlooking it. With this
example of a site taking nearly 3 years to get in, and mind you this
is a worst case scenario, taking that extra time to make sure you
find the proper category for your site is extremely important. So
when you do find the category, try and make it as easy for the
editor. First of all, a pet peeve of mine is the real estate
section. For the local category that I manage, it is clearly noted
how the title of the site is suppose to be, follow the rules and
guidelines and it will make things easier for yourself. DMOZ
