DMOZ, The Waiting Game & Moving On

Just recently, I became an Open Directory (DMOZ) editor for an additional category that I've had my eye on for sometime for the past 5 years that I've been helping DMOZ. Now, I know this category did not have an editor for at least 2 plus years, so I was wondering what exactly the back up of sites waiting to get listed were age wise. In a past article, I touch on this same subject DMOZ the wait to be listed with another category.

Needless to say, there were countless sites that were listed in the list for 2 plus years, some survived and sadly some did not. It's a shame that it took so long for someone to be approved to be an editor for the category that I was finally listed in, but this is something that some sites will encounter when submitting to categories that do not have an editor or have an editor higher up in the directory.

Just Submit & Move On

This is clearly the only option available. Make sure you find the most appropriate category for your website, follow the directions clearly, use your company name for the title and for the description it should describe what your website offers. This is essentially the easiest way to explain it. The success of your website should not always have to depend on your company site getting listed in DMOZ or not. Even when there are editors for some categories, the submission list is backed up and it will take sometime for getting through it. The best advice is follow the submission rules and when its time for the editor to review your site, there will be less changes he/she will need to make.

There are still great other directories that you can submit to. Whilst DMOZ and Yahoo are the top 2, not everyone can always afford paying the $299/year fee, and not all sites get listed in DMOZ, but there's still life beyond getting listed in DMOZ and Yahoo's Directory
