SEO News This Week
Date: January 31st, 2006
Well this is my first SEO article of the 2006 year and I'll be starting a weekly wrap-up of SEO news that I come across and find interesting.
Its BigDaddy!
If you keep up to date on SEO and Google, you may be aware of an update that Google will be implementing. Its call BigDaddy, you should note that its not an algorithm update but changes to the back end with regards to coding and how it will examine pages. You can find more information on this topic from Matt Cutts website.
What is Canonicalization?
Chances are you may be already aware of this, but not really matched the term to the exact issue with the search engines. Canonicalization is the method of picking the most appropriate website url when there are more than one choice available. With the sample website urls below, these could be 4 possible ways for the search engines to get to the same page:
- SomeDomainName.com/main.php
- www.SomeDomainName.com
- SomeDomainName.com/
What you can do to avoid this is choose one preferred way and stick to it. For example if you choose www.SomeDomainName.com, hard code this into your site and use absolute urls, that is the full url path for the page in the html coding of your site. This way, you will be sure the search engines pick up exactly what you want, and keep it consistent. For the other urls, you can place a 301 redirect going to the proper url of your choice
The Great Firewall of Google China
If you watch TV, chances are you have already heard something on Google and that it has finally invaded China, well it has a new website with filtered results for the people of China at www.google.cn. There is a good article from SearchEngineJournal regarding the subject. I would say its only a matter of time before someone comes out with an altered photo of the Great Wall of China and the Google Firewall.
These are the end of my ramblings for the day.
